A candle factory near St Albans is one of the most unusual venues for Spring Online this year. Owner Jo Martin is opening up 400-year-old Prae Wood Farm Barn, home of Potters Crouch Candles, to help older people in the area get online.

Jo was prompted to hold the event after witnessing the loneliness and isolation that many older people suffer. She says: “I spent eight years as a carer for my mum who passed away in 2011 from dementia related illness.   During that time I spent a huge amount of time with other ladies in her sheltered accommodation and care homes and was so upset to see how lonely they were. So I wanted to do something to help – to show them how they could use the internet to make friends, chat on the internet and keep in touch with their families so they didn't feel quite so isolated.”

So she is equipping the barn with a range of laptops, tablets and PCs and inviting local people to come along and try them out from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Friday April 26. The barn is set in the beautiful countryside of the Gorhambury Estate, and there will also be chance to meet the office puppy and barn cat, enjoy tea and cake and even learn a bit about how Jo’s beautiful scented candles are made.
