We've just launched a new range of online courses to help people support others with using the internet to manage money and search and apply for jobs online.

Just over 7 million people have still never used the internet* and around 16 million people aged over 15 don’t have ‘basic online skills’**. With digital skills being an increasingly essential part of everyday life the need to support others with getting online has never been greater.

Our online courses are designed for organisations and individuals who help introduce beginners to the benefits of the internet and show them how to master the basics such as using a keyboard and mouse, searching the web and using email. These Digital Champion courses are flexible, self-study e-learning programmes which include practical exercises, case studies, useful links and a learner’s certificate of completion.

Already effective in helping Digital Champions and Mentors, a recent survey of current users showed that 8 out of 10 had gained new ideas and techniques from their Digital Unite course and 9 out of 10 would recommend them.

Our new Quick Start Collection comprises their existing popular Quick Start course, Helping Beginners Get (and Stay) Online and six new online courses, the Quick Start Extras, Helping Beginners with Money, Jobs and Services Online.

The Quick Start Collection covers a wide variety of essential subjects including:

  • how to create the right learning environment for beginners, what hardware, software and websites to use and how to create and maintain learner interest.
  • building learner confidence and email security, shopping and comparing prices online and financial advice on the net
  • registering with websites, paying online, saving and making money online and e-banking.
  • basic word processing skills, computer housekeeping and using emails and the internet, finding relevant online training and gathering the right personal information to create a CV.
  • researching jobs online, uploading CVs and completing online application forms, networking for job hunters, interview skills and troubleshooting in the learning session.

Kathy Valdes, Business Support Manager for Digital Unite said: “Having the skills to use computers and the internet is no longer a nice-to-have; it is now a vital part of modern society. Experience shows that helping beginners as a Digital Champion or computer buddy is one of the most effective ways to inspire, enthuse and support non-users to get online.

“Our new Quick Start Collection is designed to provide those helpers with a structured and comprehensive foundation to develop their own essential digital and engagement skills so they can confidently reach out to others.”
