How one client is supporting public and third sector organisations to become digital-inclusion-aware.

As part of their commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring technology is an opportunity for all, Capgemini volunteers facilitate workshops to help people in different sectors understand digital inclusion and the role they can play.

How it works

Capgemini employees complete Inspire, which is our short digital inclusion awareness course, often delivered via a workshop. Employees can then learn to become Inspire facilitators and deliver the workshop to new learners.

This cascade model means Capgemini can own and scale their DI programme – they don’t need outside facilitators to make things happen – they grow their own!

They also offer Inspire workshops to community groups and local authorities with whom we already work – organisations like Cumbria CVS and Coventry Council.

Why it works

  • It’s super helpful for third & public sector organisations to get free, high quality training

“From a capacity perspective it was amazing not having to worry about preparing for the session, and letting them take things away! Having that extra boost of support to get the opportunity out there to partners and internal Council colleagues was invaluable.

Additionally, their experience in delivering this style of workshop was evident and they had so many insights to share with attendees on the call.”

Ramona McGarry, DI co-ordinator Coventry Council.

  • It’s great for companies to provide interesting & rewarding volunteering opportunities, that have clear purpose but also relevance to their roles:

“It’s great for our facilitators to get a flavour of how other industries think about and apply digital inclusion – it supports them to also reflect on their behaviours and where they can make changes.”

Iona Chamberlain Clark, DI project co-ordinator, Capgemini

  • It’s great for spreading the word about digital inclusion and growing inclusive ways of working..

“We had some fantastic conversations had around people’s roles, and valuable reflection on small ways they can change their work day to day to be more digitally inclusive.

Awareness was also raised around the scope of the challenge – not everyone expected the percentage impact in the UK to be so high – and insights generated around where they are encountering exclusion in their roles.”

Iona Chamberlain Clark, DI project co-ordinator, Capgemini

The Bigger Picture

These workshops were not one of the original outcomes when we co-designed Inspire with Capgemini and it’s something that’s developed organically from its users. We knew (hoped!) Inspire would have all sorts of effects in all sorts of areas as people started thinking in digitally inclusive ways. It’s been lovely seeing such a mutually beneficial one develop. As ever, we look forward to see what happens next…
